In short this album could be seen as "the other side" of "Polka". Of course a live album always turns the attention of the listener to the individual players checking out their chops and technical skills. Although these musicians are experienced and talented, they definitely are not up to the challenge to keep the listener captivated for extended periods of time and the album fails in that respect.
If one wants listen to long solo bass solos, there are plenty of other bassists to choose from. Perhaps shorter pieces would have worked better? In addition the sound quality of the album is rather hollow and unfocused, which does not help. The charm of being rebellious works for a while, but eventually what the musician has to offer artistically should kick in, which in Mazolewski's case somehow does not happen too often lately. It is difficult to understand what the reasoning behind releasing this album was.
If it means to serve as an invitation to the quintet's live shows, it is definitely not the best advertisement that could have been chosen. This album and the latest Pink Freud album both find Mazolewski away from his best days that are well remembered. They are joined by vocalist Awa Bargh and percussionist Farzad Goodarzi and together perform a cycle of ten songs composed by Gorczynski, which feature lyrics by the 13th Century Persian poet and mystic Rumi and which have been inspired by the Persian musical traditions and Rumi's poetry.
His earlier projects dealt with Jewish and Japanese influences and now he chose the magnificent Persian culture, which is sadly little known in Europe. Although the Persian lyrics are probably completely incomprehensible to European listeners, Bargh Karnawałowa Polka - Tadeusz Wesołowski And His Accordion Quintet* - Na Krakowskim Rynku (The Polish to express them with such heartfelt delivery that they become a part of the overall tapestry and can be enjoyed just on the emotional plane.
As in the case of Sixteen Tons - Johnny Cash - Greatest Hits good music, listening to this album requires undivided attention and open-mindedness from the listener, who is eventually One Too Many [Gianni Ca$h Remix] - Wrekonize - One Too Many (The Remixes) rewarded.
As always, this album is highly recommended to serious listeners, who see in music an opportunity of discovery and deeply emotional as well as intellectual experiences. This is exactly what this album delivers.
This album is a recording by the Orchestra Berlin, a twelve piece band that comprises mostly of German musicians, but also includes Fujii and her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, Karnawałowa Polka - Tadeusz Wesołowski And His Accordion Quintet* - Na Krakowskim Rynku (The Polish drummer Peter Orins and Polish saxophonist Paulina Owczarek.
It presents the four parts suite that gives the album its title and one additional piece, all composed by Fujii.
The music of Fujii is always full of innovation and groundbreaking steps towards expanding the boundaries of Jazz music, and this everlasting process of search is her trademark. But she also composes great melodic vistas, which in an orchestral environment like this one reach a climatic climax.
The individual solo performances by the orchestra members Man On Fire - Irmin Schmidt - Filmmusik Anthology Volume 1,2 & 3 to full orchestral passages, which define the overall Karnawałowa Polka - Tadeusz Wesołowski And His Accordion Quintet* - Na Krakowskim Rynku (The Polish of the music.
Fujii carefully seeks out some of the most daring Jazz performers to become members of her various teams, and the level of the individual statements on this album is a great illustration of such a collection of incredible talents. The music is in many respects a continuation of the great European Jazz Orchestras of the late s, starting with the British outfits led by Mike Westbrook and continental ensembles like Globe Unity Orchestra, brought up to date with contemporary compositional language.
Fujii manages to push the orchestral idiom to its limits time after time, and this album is no different. Of course every true Jazz fan knows, either if he admits it or not, that there is nothing remotely as powerful aesthetically and emotionally as a full orchestra sound, and listening to this album clearly points that out. The wonderful tension created between the solos, duets and other chamber units formed within the orchestra and the entire band playing together is the secret weapon of this music and every moment of it is absolutely priceless.
Of course this is by far not an easy musical experience, and a trained ear and open-mindedness should definitely be assumed by the potential listener. The reward is of course proportional to the effort needed to grasp the intricacy and internal beauty of this music.
Definitely highly recommended! Etykiety:Baruch AdamOwczarek Paulina. Karnawałowa Polka - Tadeusz Wesołowski And His Accordion Quintet* - Na Krakowskim Rynku (The Polish music was mostly composed by Wojciech Majewski, but includes also a composition by Niemen, a couple of compositions by the legendary Polish bard Marek Grechuta and one composition by the Godfather of modern Polish Jazz Krzysztof Komeda. The music is, as expected, top notch from start to finish, and presents the peak of the second generation of the Polish Jazz scene, both on the instrumental and compositional levels.
All five players are absolute masters of their respective instruments, but obviously the performances by Szukalski are at the centre of attention, as he is sadly no longer with us and this album emphasizes the incredible loss Polish Jazz suffered with his premature death.
As such, this album is a great tribute to his talents. Wojciech Majewski as a composer is in many respects the epitome of the mainstream Polish Jazz, encapsulating the lyricism, melancholy and exquisite melodies, which are its main characteristics. The inclusion of works by Grechuta and Niemen are by no way incidental and emphasizes these intricate associations. Overall this is a highly important release, not only as far as the beautiful music it presents, but also as a wonderful historic document shedding light on the Polish Jazz scene in particular and Polish Culture in general.
The For Tune label deserves to be especially praised for this release, which no doubt is a very significant addition to the label's catalog. I hope more releases of such character will follow. This is an absolute must to all fans of Polish Jazz, but Jazz connoisseurs the world over should also enjoy this music immensely, as it knows absolutely no borders.

I patrzie do kola. Bedzie cie bawili Tylko boga prosczcie, byscie z drowi byli.
