The title track of Solid Air was written for his neighbour Nick Drake and it retains a poignant compassion. John Martyn was now touring with ex Pentangle bassist Danny Thompson and was also devouring serious amounts of alcohol and hard drugs, cocaine, acid and heroin especially.
It was all heartfelt creative stuff. The self released Live at Leeds album saw his improvisational mode with a band including jazz drummer John Stevens and guest guitarist Paul Kossoff.
Defying a record company decision not to release a live album, John Martyn chose Angeline - John Martyn - Patterns In The Rain sell Live at Leeds from his home in Hastings personally signing each copy on despatch. However, the twin addictions to hard drugs and alcohol were causing friction and emotional strain within the home environment. In order to get himself off the treadmill, Martyn took a sabbatical in and went to Jamaica where he stayed on Strawberry Hill. One World revealed a dense atmospheric music yet understated and jazzy and almost minimalist, lyrically dealing with separation, addiction and sentiment.
In he also produced Balance and Control for Irish acoustic folk rock band Scullion who had covered John the Baptist on their previous album. Glorious Fool, and Well Kept Secret saw him touring with a band. Philentropy was a self released live set from this period while Sapphire returned to the quieter musings and Piece by Piece highlighted his vocal expertise with the future classic John Wayne.
With these his music has grown and developed with Angeline - John Martyn - Patterns In The Rain of reggae, electronics, samples, dance beats, and ambient strains. Fighting boredom has him trying new styles, new idioms, exploring new avenues his curiosity pushing the envelope further on each time, constantly hitting new heights of creativity.
This resistance to boredom and a reluctance to stand still gives his music whether electric or acoustic an edge that keeps his audience entranced ready for his next move. John Martyn has toured with bands and as a solo Angeline - John Martyn - Patterns In The Rain and in duos with Spencer Cozens, his son Spencer Martyn, fretless bassist Alan Thomson and other combinations.
Returning to Island records, he recorded SapphireAngeline - John Martyn - Patterns In The Rain by Piece and the live Foundations before leaving the label in Martyn released The Apprentice in In The Beginning - Dave Gorman - Dave Gormans Googlewhack Adventure (DVD) Cooltide in for Permanent Records, and reunited with Phil Collins for No Little Boy which featured rerecorded versions of some of his classic tracks.
Material from these recordings and his two Permanent albums has been recycled on many releases. Permanent Records also released a live 2-CD set called "Live" in And came out on Go! Discs and saw Martyn draw heavily on trip-hop textures, a direction which saw more complete expression on s Glasgow Walker ; The Church with One Bell is a covers album which draws on songs by Portishead and Ben Harper.
Martyn's last concerts were in November reprising Grace and Danger. The film concept being a strong influence of the album design of Martyn's Heaven and Earth The award was presented by his friend Phil Collins.
The BBC website says of Martyn, "his heartfelt performances have either suggested or fully demonstrated an idiosyncratic genius. The set includes unreleased studio material and rare live recordings. Martyn died on 29 Januaryin hospital in ThomastownCounty KilkennyIreland,  due to acute respiratory distress syndrome. Heo had been living in Thomastown with his partner Theresa Walsh.
Martyn's health was affected by his life-long abuse of drugs and alcohol. He was survived by his partner and his children, Mhairi and Spencer McGeachy. Following Martyn's death, Rolling Stone lauded his " progressive folk invention and improvising sorcery".
I had worked with and known him since the late s and he was a great friend. He was uncompromising, which made him infuriating to some people, but he was unique and we'll never see the likes of him again.
I loved him dearly and will miss him very much. Mike Harding introduced an hour-long tribute to Martyn in his Radio 2 programme on 25 February A tribute album, Johnny Boy Would Love Thiswas released on 15 Augustcomprising cover versions of his songs by various artists.
